Unlike most companies we do not and will not use MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) for our budget staircases. We use CD-grade Structural Ply because we believe it is a far superior product to MDF.

Why you ask?

MDF is un-healthy to work with as it contains VOCs (urea-formaldehyde).  Extra care needs to be taken while cutting and sanding to avoid inhalation of the particles.  It is easily affected by moisture and will soak up water and other liquids like a sponge and swells easily. Because it consists of such fine particles, MDF doesn’t hold screws very well, as it easily strips the screw holes and splits the boards.

Plywood has many advantages. Because it consists of layers of wood veneer with the grain on each layer running a different direction, it’s a very strong building material. It’s waterproof & strength rated. It also holds screws very tightly since the varying grains of wood on each layer give the screws something to hold onto. Ply is suitable for any floor coverings and framing underneath.

Like all of our staircases we practice a traditional style construction method. Stair builders use different installation practices when installing their product. With this style of staircase we use additional fixings to ensure a secure fixing to all structural areas. We use glue and screws, which together will reduce the possibility of squeaks or movement in the future. While some companies simply nail-gun their staircases which can cause lots issues over time.

All of our components are CNC router-machined for accuracy which ensures less cutting and waste on site during installation, only taking ½ a day to install and can be installed before or after plaster.
